Understanding Media (Book title by Marshall McLuhan).
* These word games around the slogan of the Citizens' Revolution (in the 18th century) are funny: the first two terms are always used, plus a third one at random, which is never the right one. Perhaps the late modern world is just searching for the right term(s)...?
The starting point of this page is that (as a [former] journalist) I'm not very fond of today's media and that I'd like better media/news. Recently, I've increasingly become a media critic (not politically motivated, but purely philosophically motivated). This is - like nearly everything today - a double-edged sword. There are good, not so good, and even very bad things in our media. What bothers me about today's media? In principle, we have a free media (meaning: the media can do almost whatever they want [as the self-declared fourth branch of government, mind you]! Why didn't Goethe like the media so much? He said: "They serve the times." We can assume that the media have a lot to do with the current zeitgeist - how much they merely follow it, and how much they themselves influence and bring it about, is another matter. But that means: they have more of an understanding of the present than of the past (!) and the future (!!). All in all: It's sometimes a bit difficult with them, but we cannot do without them. It was always a dream of mine to have my own newspaper or news site - here it is.
For me, the first criterion for use of articles here is immediate free information access for everyone, meaning no registration and certainly no payment. I know: journalism has to make a living, too, but I'm still going with the original web standard (a web by people for people). Large media sites with registration and/or payment are still frequented, as long as at least the article topics are somewhat transparent and a part of the articles can be read by everyone. But: anyone who hides their articles in the web from the masses today by creating financial or other hurdles (e.g., registration) obviously does not have the (journalistic?!) ambition to be read by everyone - for me, this is therefore certainly information of low quality.
Of course, not the whole world can be taken into account here - firstly, that would be too much for one person to manage, and secondly, I don't speak enough languages to understand the news of the whole world (it's limited to German, English, and French, as well as a bit of Italian and a very tiny bit of Spanish [and then my language skills quickly run out, but at least this]). But there are today some important newspapers of the world who offer english versions.
A list of media that are at the forefront of my considerations: Africanews (France), Al Jazeera (Qatar), ARD (Deutschland), BBC (United Kingdom), Bild (Deutschland), Blick (Schweiz), CGTN (China), CNN (USA), Corriere della Sera (Italia), Dailymotion (France/World), Daily Mail (United Kingdom), Daily Mirror (United Kingdom), Democracy Now! (USA), Der Spiegel (Deutschland), Der Standard (Österreich), Die Welt (Deutschland), Die Zeit (Deutschland), DW (Deutschland), El Mundo (España), El País (España), Facebook (USA/World), FAZ (Deutschland), Fox News (USA), France Info (France), France 24 (France), Google News (USA/World), heute.at (Österreich), huffpost.com (USA), Hürriyet Daily News (Turkey), Instagram (USA/World), Kronen Zeitung (Österreich), La Repubblica (Italia), Le Figaro (France), Le Monde (France), metro.co.uk (United Kingdom), MSN (USA), nau.ch (Schweiz), Newsweek (USA), NZZ (Schweiz), ORF (Österreich), People's Daily (China), RAI (Italia), RSI (Svizzera), RT (Russia), RTL (Deutschland), RTS (Suisse), RTVE (España), SRF (Schweiz), SZ (Deutschland), Tages-Anzeiger (Schweiz), taz (Deutschland), TF1 (France), The Daily Jagran (India), The Japan News (Japan), The New York Times (USA), The Sun (United Kingdom), The Times (United Kingdom), The Washington Post (USA), TikTok (China/World), Time (USA), Times of India (Indien), UN News (World), USA Today (USA), Vatican News (Vatican), VOA (USA), watson.ch (Schweiz), Wikipedia (USA/World), X (USA/World), YouTube (USA/World), ZDF (Deutschland), 20 Minuten (Schweiz) [and others].
For short current information I recommend especially these websites: BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), DW (Deutsche Welle), France24 - further: Google News (US, GB - FR, IT, ES - DE, AT, CH)* and Teletext & TV News (BBC [N (register)], ARD [N], ZDF [N], ORF [N], SRF/RTS/RSI [N]). And, of course, your local and/or national newspaper, TV and radio station (others: see in the list above [Introduction]).
